Around Here

Another work week has begun...SAT testing is this week...Oh joy! John was sick on Friday and most of Saturday, then last night my throat started getting sore. I went to work today and my ears were killing me so I figured I might should go to the doctor and get whatever I had nipped in the bud since I have to be at school the rest of this week for testing. Basically I paid my $20 copay for Mr. Doctor to tell me that yes, my throat is red, and yes my ears are really full of pressure, no I do not have strep, but just a virus and to take some Sudafed. Are you kidding me? I have been taking Sudafed. Since I am my son's only source of nourishment, Sudafed is about it for me. Should be a fun few days.
On a much happier note, Will is back to his old self. Still a bit fussy at night, but has been sleeping through the night again since Friday night. He is sleeping from 8:30 until almost 7 which we are so incredibly grateful for!
And today Will was in for a special treat. He got to meet his Aunt Jean! Mrs. Ellis is like a second mom to me-they lived down the street from us all through elementary school through high school. About 5 years ago they moved to Gainesville, Georgia. Her daughter, Elizabeth was in my wedding and is a dear friend. She had only "met" Will on the blog. He just smiled and "talked" while she was here (the talking is new...he makes all kinds of funny sounds and expressions, like he is carrying on a real conversation). We are so glad that Mrs. Ellis got a chance to stop by!

Spoiled

It appears that our sweet Will has spoiled us...he is no longer sleeping until 7am. Not even close. Starting on Sunday night, we noticed he was more fussy than usual. He still went to bed fine but awoke at 3:30. We tried just putting in the paci to get him back to sleep and he wasn't having it. So I fed him. On Monday night, he went to bed fine, still a little fussy from 4-8 but we knew that was his "witching hours" so we didn't worry about it. He woke up at 2:30, we tried the paci, and this time it worked. He slept until 6:15. Then last night was MISERABLE. He could not be comforted. We held him from the time we got home from work until the time he went to bed. He was super whiney and cried A LOT. My mom said he was fine with her when she keeps him throughout the day so I assumed nothing in my milk was bothering him since he wasn't fussy all day long. I talked with some friends and decided to take his temp last night. It was 99.6. We figured he might have an ear problem and my mom thought he might have started teething. He has started drooling a lot more lately. So this morning I decided to call the pediatrician. We were at wits end with him last night. It stinks because the time that he is so fussy is the only time we really get to spend with him. I feel so helpless because it isn't like he can talk and tell me what is wrong so basically all we can do is rock/carry/bounce him until it is bedtime.
So we went to the doctor today and I felt like we were "those parents." Doc said there was nothing wrong with him-she checked his ears and throat and then rubbed his gums. She doesn't think he is teething yet. She said she doesn't consider 99.6 a fever...for infants more like 100.4. We talked endlessly about his routine, feeding, bedtime etc. Basically she thinks he is just 10 weeks old and has decided to act like it. She said he is still figuring out life and it has gotten rather crazy in the past few weeks since I was home with him the first 8 weeks of his life, then my mom kept him at my house for the 9th week, I was on spring break last week, and now this week my mom is keeping him but they have just moved so I am dropping him off at her house. She said she thinks he is just overstimulated during the dayand then pooped once we are home from work but fights a nap in the late afternoon. We are going to try to bump up his daytime feedings to 6oz (He is taking 5.5 right now) and try to get in an extra nap around 4-5ish. Not a long one but just enough so that he isn't that irritable. John and I just wanted to air on the side of caution and make sure he didn't have anything that would call for antibiotics. To be honest, we sort of wanted her to find something, just so we would feel like the problem was solved. We don't want him to just be fussy. But we know it could be a lot worse. I mean of course we don't want anything to be wrong with Will but at least that would make us feel like he is crying for a reason. She assured us that this stage would soon pass-probably in the next 2 weeks or so. Until then...the only advice she gave us was to drink :)

We love him anyway and are indeed blessed. We just want him to be his precious, smiley self all the time, but we know that isn't possible. She said it is not all that common for a baby of his age to be sleeping through the night. But we believed in Babywise and was sure our son had graduated to the next phase :) Hopefully he will come back around. I know I shouldn't wish this stage away. There will come a time not too long from now that he will not be still enough for me to rock him and cuddle him. That song "You're Gonna Miss This" keeps coming into my head. I have to keep telling myself that.

To Clarify...

My nephew will be 8 in a few short weeks. He is NOT on the Chicago Cubs...he is on a little league team...this year it is the Cubs. After a funny comment from Sarah and some emails, I decided I should clarify this. While we do hope to take in a Braves vs. Cubs game this year, the game I was talking about will be a bunch of 7 and 8 year olds in Macon, Georgia. Possibly more entertaining than a braves game!

Just For Dylan

My nephew is on the Cubs this year. Of course we were so excited to hear this since John loves the Cubs and Will got some pretty cute gear from his Uncle John and Aunt Doreen in Chicago. He will get to sport this gear when we go to watch one of Dylan's games soon!

Dylan,
Way to go on the home run!! I can't wait to come and watch you play. I miss you already.
I Love You,
Baby Will

Girls, Girls, Girls

Yesterday Will and I took a trip to Auburn (without Daddy-he is in Dallas for a wedding). We were so excited to finally meet Baby Kate. We also had the chance to stop by and meet Baby Ryan and Kirkley! First stop was to the McKinnons. Will could not contain his excitement once we arrived...

He thought Baby Kate was too precious and so did his momma. She is the tiniest thing I have ever seen! I was scared to hold her at first because Will has become so durable that I don't think twice when I pick him up. She felt like a feather when I picked her up. She was seriously smaller than Bentley!! She is a doll and was a perfect angel the whole time we were there.

Kate started to roll towards Will and then he got nervous. Clayton had already told him all about his guns so he got very still and serious-he knew better than to make a move while all the cameras were around (I could just eat those toes!!)
But then we told him not to worry-Clayton had already gone back to work.
Aren't they so cute. She is so small compared to Will. He is only 57 days older than Kate. It is amazing how big they get so fast. We know Kate will have changed so much when we get to see her again in 2 weeks.
After leaving Kate, Will and I made our way to visit Baby Ryan. She was born just a few days before Kate and she is precious too! She looks just like her daddy and has a head full of hair. She was so content the whole time we were there. This was about the only good picture we could get of the two of them. Ryan much preferred to be cuddled than laid out on the couch. (*Notice the outfit change-Will must have been so overwhelmed by being around girls all day that he pooped all over himself-it leaked through his diaper onto his clothes. So we had to make a quick change and all I had in his diaper bag were pajamas. You can bet he was real happy with me when we went outside and it was 80 degrees and he had to wear footed pjs!
Our last stop was to see Kirkley and her mommy. Kirkley was not a big fan at first. She did not like the idea of sharing her mommy. She came around after a little while though and was a big help.
She rocked Will in his carseat when we were about to leave and he got a little fussy.
We loved seeing our sweet friends in Auburn and missed those we couldn't see. There is only so much time in the day. We can't wait to see everyone again soon!!

Ready to Read!

I am in love with our latest purchase for the little man's room. I am a teacher and am crazy about children's picture books! Some of my co-workers in Auburn (Allyson) thought I was nuts for having so many picture books and using them to teach 6th graders. She thought I was destined to teach 2nd grade when I told her I was moving to Birmingham. Well I only moved down one grade level and still absolutely love my picture books. So do the kids (even the 6th graders...they may have acted too cool, but I could tell they were trying really hard to not look interested).
Naturally, I hope Will develops a love for children's books like I have. He had accummulated quite a collection of hardback books that did not fit on his bookshelf. I want his room to be filled with books. I came across this precious magazine rack from Pottery Barn Kids the other night and convinced John that Will's room really needed it!! And it did. It looks perfect under his wall ledge and now it displays all of my favorite and soon to be Will's favorite picture books. Plus it is right by the glider which made it very easy last night for me to make my selection and read to Will. Some of these I bought while taking a Children's Lit course in college, others I have bought with Scholastic bonus points, and the latest additions came from some gift certificates that I received this past week at our school book fair. I cannot wait for Will to be big enough to go and pick his favorite book off the shelf and climb up in my lap!
And yes, Amy, that is Walter the Farting Dog (hysterical for those of you that have never read it) right there on the bottom shelf!!

Growing Boy

Will had his 2 month old check up yesterday! It is hard to believe how fast time flies. I have always read that on other people's blogs but you don't truly realize it until you have a child of your own! Will weighed 12lbs 6oz and was 23.5 inches long (When he was born he was 7lbs 13oz and 21.5 inches long). He was in the 75 percentile for both height and weight. He had to get his first round of shots yesterday...one in each thigh. Poor little thing. When the nurse stuck him with the first shot his eyes just got really big and it was a delayed cry. We were able to calm him down pretty quickly. Then she stuck him with the second shot and he was angry. He cried so loud that no sound was even coming out of his mouth. It was so sad!! I think shots are definitely harder on momma than baby! But he survived and was such a good boy. He even left with 2 very girly flower band-aids to prove it :)

Will Meets God

Yesterday was Will's first day in church. In Greek Orthodox tradition, approximately 40 days after a baby is born, they return to the church to be "churched-" that is to begin attending church. It is basically a blessing on the mother and since they have been out of church for a while and a blessing of the baby who will now start to attend church. When we woke up on Sunday morning, John told Will he was going to meet God today. I thought that was hysterical. John's family was of course there and my family came too. It was great that my brother and his family were already in town because they got to come too!

The Last Supper

Friday was my dad's 58th birthday. To celebrate his birthday, my brother and his family came into town so we could have one last family dinner at the house we have lived in since the summer before I started 1st grade. My parents are moving to Liberty Park this Friday to get closer to us and to my grandmother. My brother wanted to prepare dinner so I took on cake duty.

It was certainly news to me that Brandon could cook so well! We felt like we were at a gourmet restaurant. He made grilled porkchops covered with gouda cheese and mushrooms, red skinned mashed potatoes, and vegetable stir fry. I slaved over the cake - ordering it at Publix...Nascar themed because my dad is a fanatic! All in all it was so much fun to all be together before my parents move and we start making new memories in the new house. Happy Birthday Pops!

I love this picture-the first one of Pops with all of his grandchildren

Life is Good

Work has gotten much easier towards the end of this week and it makes me just enjoy the afternoons and evenings spent with Will and John so much more. I don't think I will ever take the weekends for granted ever again!
Last night I overheard John telling Will goodnight before I fed him and put him to bed...

John: "Your my little buddy....you know that. You were a very good boy tonight. You are my best buddy...didn't take long did it. I love you."

Made me smile and melted my heart.

Life is good.

I Survived

I survived going back to work. While it has not been easy by any means, at least I have made it through 2 days back to school without being a complete basket case. Yesterday was much harder than I would have ever imagined. I love my job and was excited to get back into some sort of a routine. But when I had to hand sweet Will off to my mom yesterday morning, I lost it. I sobbed all the way to work, which is only a mile, so I was very red faced when I got there. Then I started crying again when my co-worker asked me how it was to be back and leave Will. I thought that I did pretty good in preparing myself over the past 8 weeks by leaving him with my mom every other day or so and running to Target or whatever other errands I needed to run. But leaving him for a whole day is much different! Once the day started I was fine, simply because I have a very fast-paced job (any teacher does). So once the kids entered the classroom I was very busy until 2:35. I only called home twice to check on him! Today was much easier. Still hard, but no tears were shed. I know I am extremely blessed to have my mom come to my house to take care of him-he could not be in better hands and at least I know that someone is loving him as much as I would while I am gone. But it is still hard. I never thought I was cut out to be a stay at home mom but my thoughts have changed drastically since having Will. I miss him so much while I am away. It is funny how much your priorities change once you are looking out for someone more than yourself. I do not take for granted our afternoons spent together like I did on maternity leave. I guess I just didn't think about how soon it would be over. 8 weeks flew by. He has changed so much and gotten so much bigger. Normally I am concerned with laundry and making sure the den is straightened up and cleaning the kitchen...now all of those things have gone to the wayside. If they get done after Will goes to sleep at 8:30, great. If not, there are bigger things in life. And all of that stuff will be there tomorrow. I am trying to just enjoy my time with him in the afternoons and remember that soon he will grow up and not think it is so cool to cuddle with his mommy. For now I am going to bed. It was much easier waking up so early when I knew I would have time to nap at some point during the day. Now it is non-stop from about 4:30ish A.M. until 9:00 P.M. But I am enjoying every second!!

Baby Kate

Will's first (and only if we have anything to do with it) girlfriend arrived this morning at 12:56 am. Shealy had Kathleen Elizabeth!!!!! Check her blog for pictures. She is absolutely precious! We cannot wait to meet her. Shealy and Clayton ~ We love you so much and are so excited about this sweet baby girl.

Back to the Grind

8 weeks already??!! Can you believe it. I have been off work for 8 weeks. It seems like just yesterday that I went to tell my principal that Friday would be my last day and we were scheduled to be at the hospital at 4pm on Monday. My how time flies. I have very mixed feelings about going back. I have been up to visit my students several times since my maternity leave started and each time I am reminded of how much I miss them and love them dearly. I could not be blessed with a sweeter class with precious parents that come with them. I know it will be good for me to get into a steady routine {showered by 7 :)} and I know I am extremely blessed to have my mom keeping him while I am at school. However, I just can't imagine how I am going to stay away from this sweet little face for 8 hours.
I have melted down several times this weekend, hoping I got it all out so that today I can go in and teach and not look like a basket case. I know I am super lucky to have a job that I love and that also lets me leave at 3 and have summers off. It really is the perfect job for a mom who does not have the luxury of staying home. It just seems that my 8 weeks went by far too quickly. I keep wondering if Will is going to forget me or be sad because I have left him. Of course the answer to both of these questions is no, but they are of course in the back of my mind. Please say a quick prayer for me today if you will! That I can hold up and not cry in front of my kids and that I can make the adjustment easily. Summer will be here before we know it!

Go Figure

I am sure this is no shock to anyone!! Everyone and their mother when they see Will tells me he looks EXACTLY like his father. And I don't mind because it just so happens I think John is pretty cute. However, if you look at my baby pictures, he definitely has my nose and chin! I think it is his dark skin coloring and eyes that makes people assume he has none of his mother in him!

First Glimpse of Snow

We woke up to a winter wonderland this morning! Of course, this was supposed to be Will's first day in church...needless to say we did not go. It was WAY too cold to get him out and we weren't sure about some of the roads. So instead we stayed home and played in the snow. Well John and Bentley played in the snow and Will and I watched.
John played ball with Bentley and it was hysterical. This is Bentley's 2nd experience with snow. We got some snow last year in Auburn, but not like this. When John finally brought Bent back inside, he was covered in snowballs. It looks like he has on a sweater!! Snow just kept accumulating on his under belly as he chased after the ball. He went straight into the bathtub once inside.
Will and I felt left out so I bundled him up and ran him outside for some quick pictures, and so he could at least say he had experienced the snow. Granted this picture is not so lovely of me (still in my Pajamas and unbrushed hair) but I love his face in this. Every time the snow hit his face, he would stick his tongue out!

After Will went down for a nap, John decided he wanted to build a snowman. I had no idea he intended to build a for real snowman. And furthermore, I couldn't believe the snow was so perfect for a snowman...very easy to pack and stack. After about an hour, this is what I saw!
John did an awesome job. I helped put the finishing touches on. We used clementines for the eyes, cinnamon sticks for the nose and (small) arms, and a piece of Bentley's bacon for the mouth. We totally forgot about buttons! It looked like a snowman you would find up north.
John was so proud of his creation! We wanted to get a picture of John with Will by the snowman, but by the time the little man woke up, it had fallen over and was melting. What a great snow day!!
