Sweet!

Two bags of these sweet friends magically jumped into my shopping cart this weekend while grocery shopping. I have a feeling more of their friends will be making their way into my home before the end of April.

Is it just me or do Sweettarts taste so much better when they take on the form of a chick, duck, or bunny?

Tricks!

The big boy bed transition is going GREAT!! Much better than I had anticipated. I actually think the anticipation was far worse than the actual transition. There were several nights last week when Will woke up in the middle of the night and just needed help getting settled back down. It was usually very easy...just had to convince him that 2am was not exactly the ideal time to play choo choos :) Here are some tips that I think really helped us enter this new phase. Please know that by all means I am NOT an expert on this....Will has only been in his big boy bed for a week. I know we are going to go through other issues. But I also know there are those of you out there who are about to embark on this transition. I read a million articles on google and I don't think any of them really helped, it just made me worry more! Talking to others who had made the transition was much more therapeutic to me. So here goes...

1) We set up Will's big boy bed in the new room at the beginning of January. He had a good 2 months to see it....we talked about it. Explained it to him, etc. We did not tell him that his crib was going to be Alex's bed or his room was turning into Alex's new room. Obviously he will get that once the baby is here.
2) Choo Choo Sheets. Will is obsessed with them. Every night when he gets in bed he talks about them and the first thing he says in the morning is "Mommy sleep big boy bed...train sheets!" We put these on his bed about 2 weeks before he started sleeping in there so he would be excited. Obviously your kid may not be as gung ho about trains as Will is, but just go with whatever they are into.
3) Decor. We bought fun, cool things for Will's big boy room like an airplane lamp and train car book shelves and toy box. He also has a train night light. All of these things made him LOVE his new room. I don't think he has been in the nursery once since we made this transtion.
4) A monitor. We never used a monitor with Will after like the first few weeks because we shared a wall with the nursery and could hear his every move anyway. Plus, I couldn't sleep because I was just listening. But moving him to the front bedroom of the house made this a necessity. He sleeps with a sound machine so it hasn't been hard for us to get used to the monitor (after the first night or two). We contemplated getting a video monitor so we could see him in there....but we really don't want to spend the money on one. I haven't read great reviews on any of them. We can decipher sounds over the audio monitor...like when it sounded like he was right next to the monitor we figured he had slid out of his bed, which he had. We can also hear the door knob if it should open...we tested that out. Anyways, the monitor just gave me peace of mind.
5) After the first 2 nights of going in to check on Will and discovering that he had slid (I say slid because he is in a toddler bed and it is so low to the ground that he can't really "fall") out of bed (which as a side note, phased him not. He was sound asleep on the carpet :) ) we decided that we might should push his toddler bed up against the wall. It is SO much cuter turned out and it makes his whole room look cuter and more pulled together, but we knew it would only need to be temporary so he could get used to being in a bed instead of a crib. Since then, he has not slid out of his bed once. I am hoping after a few months, we can turn it back like it was originally, but for now, it keeps him in bed and sleeping through the whole night, so I'll deal.
5) We taught Will the phrase "out please." We talk every night about how he is not to get out of his big boy bed without calling for one of us and saying "out please." I thought this might turn on us and he might be saying this phrase in the middle of the night, but he has only used it in the morning. And he knows exactly what it means. Sunday morning he slept until 7 and when I heard him saying "Mommy" on the monitor I went in to get him. I opened the door and found him sitting on his bed with his feet on the floor and when he saw me he said "out please!" with the biggest grin. It was adorable. I know those of you with older children are laughing at me right now because you know that sooner than later in my future, Will is probably not going to care about that phrase anymore and roam all over the place if he wants. But for now, it has helped. Even if he is crying, he has only gotten out of his bed once so far. That was during nap on Sunday. We usually miss our window for getting down for a nap easily on Sunday due to church. So he fought his nap for a good 45 minutes yesterday, including not only getting out of his bed without permission, but coming out of the door and standing by the bench until we noticed he was there. We are hoping that the spank spoon and some firm talk will keep this from happening often.
6) This sounds super cheesy, but I think the most important thing is to talk it up and have a good attitude!!! We talked for basically two months about how Will was a big boy and how he was going to have a big boy room with big boy things, including a new, big boy bed. It was like he felt it was an honor or something. I do also think he was "ready." He has never tried once to climb out of his crib, but the weekend before we put him in his new bed, he would go in there at night like he wanted to sleep in there. I know some people will tell you there is a "magic age" for transitioning a child from a crib to a bed. I think every child is different, so as long as you stay positive about it, they probably will too.

For most of you reading, this is totally inapplicable to your life, and so I apologize if you made it to the end. And for others, you have probably already dealt with this with your children and are laughing at me for putting so much thought into this whole transition (and I am probably wishing you had written a blog like this so that it would have helped me :)!!). But for those of you who have kids that you will be transitioning soon, I hope this helps. I know I will probably be so brain dead by the time it is time to transition Alex, that it might be helpful that I wrote these things down. Then again, Will has been so easy through most of the big transitions that Alex will probably be my hellion and I will have to throw all of these tips out the window!

I am going to try to post pictures of the big boy room tonight-I think it turned out absolutely adorable!

Angel Baby

This little angel face has been a rock star in his big boy bed the past 2 nights!!!
Night 1 (Monday): I heard him on the monitor at 11:30 saying "Mommy...Dog...." I went in there and think he had a dream about a dog....he has been having these lately. He was very easy to get settled and back to sleep. I rocked him about 10 minutes. He woke again at 5:00...I heard him on the monitor saying "back hurt....back hurt." I got up to check on him and when I walked in he had his feet on his pillow and his head at the other end...and he was giggling. I told him he was a silly boy and got down on the bed to snuggle with him. I was SO proud of him at this point that I didn't care if he was up for the day at 5:00 A.M. He wanted to rock so I rocked him about 15 minutes and laid him down and I had to go in and wake him up at 6:34!!!! To say that we made a big deal about how proud we were of him is an understatement. I told him the WHOLE way to school how excited I was and what a good boy he was. He walked right into his classroom at daycare and looked at his teachers and exclaimed "Big boy bed!!" John told him when he got home from work. I really do think he was ready to make this transition.

Night 2 (Tuesday): I left Will's room at 7:38 after books, prayers, and a little rocking. I did not hear a PEEP from him until 5:00 when I just heard him saying "api" which is paci. I guess he couldn't find the 7 pacis that were laying all over his bed :) I went in and found him one and he just took it and rolled over and went back to sleep until 6:00!

I know we are far from over this battle. I am sure in a few weeks he will realize he can get up and walk around or something and we'll have a new set of problems to solve. But for now, I am just so happy that this transition is over. I was so tired of worrying about it!! I know we will have bad nights...but for now, so far so good!

Times they are a changin'

We have been working on Will's big boy room for weeks. It is finally complete. My goal was to have Will start sleeping in his bed over spring break. Selfishly, I thought about this decision, and realized I wanted to make sure he was well rested and in a good mood over spring break because we had fun plans, so I just put it off. Basically, I am just a big chicken.
So tonight is the night. After bath we went straight into his big boy room. We got him dressed and he dove right in to his bed. He wanted to read his books and say his prayers in his bed...would not get out for anything. I looked at John like "maybe this is going to be a breeze..." We finished our prayers and turned out the light and turned on his sound machine. I asked him if he wanted to rock and he said "No." I told him night night and out we went. About 2 minutes later we hear "Mommy...Mommy" on the monitor. Not a cry of distress, just more like...."What is going on? Did you really think it was going to be that easy??" So I went back in and he was staring at his train tracks saying "Play choo choos, play cars." I figured this might be an issue since his playroom is now his big boy room. We have done a pretty good job of organizing his closet with all sorts of tubs for his toys, but his train set is too big to put away. I told him it was time to go night night and to that he replied, "See Dada." Figures that he would at least see if he could get a different answer out of John :)
I asked again if he wanted to rock and this time he did. So we rocked and I prayed silently over my big boy. Tears streaming down my face...not being able to believe it is time for us to make this transition. I am so amazed everyday that John and I were given this precious blessing. After about 15 minutes of rocking, I told him goodnight and laid him down again. That was about 30 minutes ago and I haven't heard a peep.
As I type this, I am sitting here just staring at the monitor (which is sound only, by the way). I feel like John and I are waiting for a bomb to go off. It is seriously like having a newborn again. I keep thinking I hear him whimper. That is my biggest fear...that he will get scared and I won't hear him. I know this is just a part of growing up...for Will and for me. It is just hard. Silly hard. Something I never thought I would have this much anxiety over. In some ways blogging about this in such great detail is just therapeutic for me. I look back at the week of posts I did when Will first started daycare and laugh-I am reminded how awful that week was, but that we not only survived, Will loves it now. It is also a precious reminder of how faithful the Lord is to hear my prayers. So at 33 minutes and counting...my prayers go up tonight...For my sweet baby boy in his big boy bed!

Happy Birthday, Daddy!!

What a perfect end to spring break-celebrating John's birthday and spending some family time on a beautiful Sunday.
This year I took Will shopping to pick out a present for daddy. I had already bought John a gift, so I thought it might be fun for Will to give him something that he picked out especially for him. I figured the Auburn store would be the best place to take him...Will could pick out anything and John was pretty much guaranteed to love it :) Will was careful in his decision-he weighed his options. There were lots of front runners-an Auburn beach towel, some crazy big Auburn slippers...I tried to be very careful to not express any opinion. I wanted it to be completely from Will. Thankfully Will has pretty cheap taste and the prints/expensive things did not interest him. He ended up selecting an Auburn golf ball (not a package of them....just 1 :) ) and an Auburn mini basketball hoop with ball (you know, the kind that you can attach to a door...). These gifts made me smile because I figured Will saw the balls and thought FUN but the entire time we were in there he kept saying "Daddy peasent" so he knew what we were after. John of course loved his gifts and has already mounted the basketball goal in Will's big boy room. I think his race car birthday card that told him he was on a fast track to fun made him feel pretty special too (also hand picked by Will).
We went to John's parents tonight for dinner. John joked that he felt really manly with a pink cake and his son wearing a pink shirt-but let's just be honest....there are few things better in life than Edgar's strawberry cake, AND Will is cute in anything!

Favorite Friends, The Zoo, and a little Wednesday morning DRAMA

For about a month now, my best friend Shealy and I have been planning to get together with the kids over spring break and do something fun. We weighed all of our options and decided that they would come to Birmingham and we would go to the zoo. Will LOVES the zoo (well really the choo choo, but he is halfway amused by the animals too)...Kate had only been to zoolight Safari which is in December when the animals aren't out, so since it was supposed to be beautiful, those were the plans we made. They were set to arrive at our house between 9:00 and 9:30. The night before I had asked John if he would put his car seat into my car so Kate and Shealy could ride with us, maximizing our time together. He pulled my car out of the garage late Tuesday night and made the switch. I didn't think anything else about it.
Will and I were enjoying our morning when I made the mistake about 8:00 of telling Will that Mrs. Shealy and Kate Kate were on their way and we were headed to the zoo! He freaked out...I'm telling you, he loves the zoo. Problem was he wanted to go to the zoo RIGHT THEN. 2 year olds don't understand logistics. I tried explaining to him that as soon as they arrived, we would get in the car and head to the zoo. He cried for about 30 minutes straight saying "Kate Zoo Choo Choo." He even went and got his shoes and sat on the bench. Then he went to the front door and just stared out and said CAR!!!! I was about to lose it-those of you with children know how the crying of a child can put you on edge.....so I decided that I would just put Will in his car seat and he could wait in there and I would clean out my car or something until they arrived (at this point it was 8:45, so I knew they wouldn't be much longer). We walked out to my car when I realized it was locked. I never lock it in the garage but since it was in the driveway, that made sense. I proceeded to leave Will crying by the car while I ran back inside to retrieve my keys. They weren't on the bench, they weren't on the dryer, they weren't in the bathroom, they weren't in the kitchen (common places my keys have been known to "land") and then it hit me....yesterday when I got home I pulled into the garage, got out, and went to get Will out of his seat. I placed my keys right by his car seat and got him out. I never lock the door because again, it is parked in the garage. Well, John didn't know my keys were in the car, so he locked it when he finished with the car seat. I run back out to the car and sure enough there sit my keys right next to his carseat with my purse and camera in the floor board. So Shealy and Kate are about 15 minutes away and all of my belongings, including every car seat we own, is locked in my car. I began to panic a little-my sweet friends had just driven all this way only to arrive to a crying, mad baby and frustrated momma with no way to leave. I called the police department and they directed me to Pop-A-Lock, a company that comes out to unlock your car. They promised they would arrive in 40 minutes or less. Meanwhile, about 9:10 Shealy and Kate pull up. Will's cheeks are stained with tears, he doesn't want to calm down...the poor thing just wants to go to the zoo. We let them play outside for a bit on bikes and choo choos and finally about 50 minutes later, Pop-A-Lock arrives and all is well (except for them setting the car alarm off as they unlocked the car with Kate right in front of the car-to say it scared the poor thing would be an understatement!!!!). About 15 minutes later, 2 strollers are loaded, suckers are in both kids mouths, and we were off to the zoo. Don't you hate when mornings start out that way??? It is like the mood for the rest of your day has been set by the chaotic mess that ensued the first part of the morning.
We did manage to have a great time at the zoo-The Birmingham Zoo is opening up a whole new renovated part called Trails of Africa April 1st, but they were doing a sneak preview this week and I think it is going to be so nice. The elephant was out so we were able to see him up close and personal, the tiger paced back and forth in front of Kate and Will for the longest time, and the monkeys, giraffes and zebras did not disappoint either. Of course the best part for the kiddos was choo choo ride at the end! My favorite part was spending some long overdue time with my precious friend...We sooo miss the McKinnons...they were my favorite part about Auburn :) Please come back soon!!
"Aubie!"
Come on Momma!

A much needed break!!

Spring break is this week...I love being a teacher. Especially now that I have Will. It is so much fun to have a week off to play with him and be lazy in our pajamas in the mornings...go out to lunch...visit with friends!
Monday we kicked off spring break at the McWane Center with our sweet friends Melissa and Ava. Ava is 3.5 so interaction until yesterday has been more "I'm playing with you/beside you because my mommy talks to your mommy a lot and I guess this is what we are supposed to do..." But yesterday at McWane she was so precious to Will. She wanted to always hold his hand and she directed him at what activity he should do next. He would start playing and she would just oversee with her hands on her hips. It was hysterical! The main reason we went to McWane was because The Backyardigans were there for a photo op. Ava is a big fan....Will seemed indifferent. We have DVR'd some episodes so he could watch a few before we went so he would at least somewhat recognize them. While we were waiting in line I found myself laughing at some of the other moms....of course all of those moms there in line had brought their children because I am sure their kids are big fans of the show. But when their kids got scared/upset when they got up close and personal with the big, colorful moose, bird, and ?? (I'm not sure what Uniqua is), they forced them to sit next to them, talk to them, touch them. It was just funny to me-what should be something fun for the kids, turns into a nightmare in which these momma's are bound and determined that since they thought it was such a great idea and have waited in line, their kids are GOING to enjoy it. I am sure I will be one of those momma's someday :)
Here is our trip in pictures!
And just in case you noticed...yes Will is wearing the exact same outfit as he wore for Pop's birthday dinner. It is because I just picked these up at Baby Gap on Saturday and I am slightly obsessed. They are so stinkin' cute on!!
