This is still what it looks like almost a year later. I am in need of some decorator expertise! I know we need a large painting over our fireplace, but we are not yet in the position to shell out that kind of money. I want to put something on the mantle but I have no clue what to do. I am so jealous of all my blogging friends who have such great taste and know exactly what to do with a boring space! So please offer your suggestions, advice, etc. We are having a party here in 2 weekends and I would love for it to look a little better by then.

Help!
A decorator I am not. This is what our fireplace and the space around it looked like when we moved in.

a large mirror is en vogue over fireplace mantles these days. Just sit it on the mantle, lean back against wall and voila!
Go to to that Garden Ridge place. It has dirt cheap, "art" and the mirrors are 1/2 off right now. It would not be a true piece of art but they do have pretty things every now and then!
or you could do a cluster of frames - get some frames at hobby lobby (almost always 50% off) in various sizes, but mostly matching. then you can either fill them with photos or you can find a really great art magazine and cut out images you like. lots of art magazines are larger than standard pubs, so you can find bigger images.
i did this years ago when i was short on art work for my living room.
I found a large collage frame at Hobby Lobby for 75% off and filled it with pictures of Jay and I from our wedding day. I think it looks pretty good :) Also I love candles up there!
Oh I wish I was in Bham and could come over to help! I love redecorating mantles! I would do a large mirror and then some pillar candles on pretty bases on one side(maybe three of different heights) and then maybe a plant in a pretty planter (one with some texture) on the other side...they have pretty houseplants even at Walmart that are impossible to kill!
